ELIKA GALLERY
Cultural Space:  Retrofit/Conversion:  Athens 2010

A Storage Basement conversion into an Art Gallery maximizes light & air flow, opens up visitor & artwork access and increases its public presence on the street. The project inhabits a sidewalk loggia, stairs, underground, core spaces and courtyard - all communal areas - of a typical Greek Polykatoikia.  It defines thresholds & transitions through design - enhancing the loggia, expanding the staircase landings, carving out a sunken courtyard, coloring backrooms and lightwells and planting an urban garden.  A neutral and mutable gallery space opens among these thresholds, with a series of built-in, inventive art storage depots.
